Starting Your Own Side Hustle? Tips on How to Overcome Your Fears and Just Go For It!

I have owned my own photography business for over 9 years and I often get asked, “how did you decide to start a business? And at such a young age?” I whole heartedly believe that God has given each and every one of us specific talents and passions for a reason… to share them with the world. Whether that looks like having the patience and love to be a mother, the desire to constantly learn and teach others, the drive to start your own business or make a difference in the world, or maybe all of the above!

As for my age, I believe I was given the gift to dream big and believe I can do anything I set my mind to. So I always want to use that to inspire everyone around me to know that they can do the same! You can go for your wildest dreams and succeed. You just need to trust and believe in yourself. Those desires that are on your heart are not placed there by accident!

So to answer the question, “how do I overcome my fears of starting a side hustle?” It’s actually very simple. You just DO IT. Don’t allow those fears of failure or the uncertainty of stepping out of your comfort zone stop you. If you are looking for a reason not to, there will always be one. If you’re waiting for the perfect time to start, it will never happen. Just start. And remember, you were fearfully and wonderfully made by a loving God who wants you to share your gifts and passions with the world! Just go for those dreams and start!

My top three tips on how to just start:

  1. Decide what side hustle you want to start. You may already know what you’re passionate about and can easily move on to step two. But if not, and you just know you have a desire to do something — here is a simple way to narrow it down: what is a passion or hobby you have that people complimented you on? Maybe you paint and people ask you to create pieces for them, or photography is a hobby for you and people are starting to ask if they can hire you to take photos of them. You can make a business out of anything as long as you’re willing to put in some work and dedication.

  2. The most practical thing to do once you’ve decided what side hustle you’re going to start is choose a business/brand name, then get all of your legal stuff in order. Starting with setting up a DBA and opening a business bank account are what I always suggest to start with. I know this is what most people dread but I promise that if you do this stuff right away and get it over with, you will never regret it and it will set you up for success in the future (aka come tax time).

  3. Trust the process. You have to keep in mind that nothing is built in a day, growth in your craft and side hustle will take time and effort. Don’t give up and continue to look at every mistake or failure as a lesson that will help you get to your future goals. It takes serious work and determination, but honestly, if you’re truly passionate about what you’re doing, half the time it doesn’t even feel like work!
