HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN MODERN FARMHOUSE COFFEE TABLE!

Last month I posted a photo of our living room and asked you guys on Instagram if you'd be interested in seeing how we built our coffee table and your wish is our command! :) The sneaky part about this table is that the legs are actually made out of wood painted black instead of metal (to save some $$$), but you'd honestly never notice unless we pointed it out! Isn't that amazing?!

Note: This material is for the actual size of our coffee table, but you are able to adjust it to fit your living room and needs. The length is 57 inches, the width is 21-3/4 inches, and the height is about 18 inches. To determine the best size for your coffee table, it should be the same height as the cushions on your couch or 1-2 inches lower and be approximately two-thirds the length of your couch.

Materials needed:
(4) 1" x 6" x 8' Pine boards
(4) 2" x 2" x 8' Pine boards
Stain of your choice (we used Minwax Special Walnut)
Flat black paint
1-3/4" Wood screws
2" Finish head screws
Wood glue
Wood filler
Water-based polycrylic

Tools needed:
Pencil
Tape measure
Miter saw
Screw gun
Sandpaper or sanding block
Paint brushes (for black paint and wood glue)
Rags (for staining)

Step 1. Measure, mark, and cut the 1" x 6" boards to 57 inches long. These are what we used for the top of the coffee table.

Step 2. Measure and cut four 2" x 2" boards to 14-1/4 inches long. These will be the legs of the coffee table.

Step 3. To create the top and bottom frames, set your miter saw to a 45-degree angle. Then take a 2" x 2" board, cut one end at a 45-degree angle, roll the board over, measure to 21-3/4 inches from the pointed end, and make another 45-degree cut. Do this same process three more times for a total of four equal pieces.

Step 4. Use the same process as above to cut four more 2" x 2" boards to 57 inches long.

Step 5. Set your miter saw back to a 0-degree angle. Cut one 2" x 2" to 19 inches long.

Step 6. Assemble the top and bottom frame with the wood glue and finish head screws, using the four 2" x 2's that are 21-3/4 inches long and other four that are 57 inches long. You should end up with two large rectangles.

Step 7. Attach the 14-1/4 inch 2" x 2"s to each corner of one of the frames (these are the legs), using wood glue and the finish head screws. Then place the other rectangular frame on top of the four legs and attach using the wood glue and finish head screws.

Step 8. Now that the frame is together, you will need to attach the final piece of 2" x 2". Measure 28-1/2 inches to find the center of the table and install the 19-inch piece so that it is parallel with the ends of the table.

Step 9. Fill all of the screw holes on the frame with wood putty and let it dry. Once dry, sand the wood putty smooth and any of the rough areas of the frame before painting it. Once you've finished sanding, paint the frame black.

Step 10. While the wood putty is drying, stain the 1"x 6" boards. Once the frame and the 1"x 6"s are dry, it's time for final assembly! Using the 1-3/4" wood screws, attach the boards to the frame by screwing them from underneath.

Step 11. Clear coat the coffee table with a water-based polycrylic and let dry. And there you have it!! Put your feet up and relax! :)

To me, the best part about DIY projects is creating and building something that you love at an affordable price, completely custom to fit you, your house, and your life!! What could be better than that?! Let us know if you build your own modern farmhouse coffee table!
